Condition Overview

The lower jaw known as ‘jowls’, loses volume as we age which can result in sagging in the lower face. This can result in a loss of definition in the jawline or cheeks and can cause the area to lose its youthful definition.

FAQ

The cheek bones becomes flatter, so the cheek area is not as well supported and this results in sagging and jowls. The deep tissues lose collagen which means that the tissues become loose and hence, the cheek area is less well supported. There is loss of volume in the face due to loss of fat in the face especially in the cheek area. The skin also becomes thinner and loses elasticity. This is due to loss of collagen and elastin, the proteins responsible for keeping the skin plump, firm and elastic. Hence, the skin is lax and begins to sag and contributes to the formation of jowls.

To treat this area we need to restore the lost volume in the cheek and jaw region. The most effective treatment for this is dermal filler. The dermal fillers used at our Clinic contain Hyaluronic Acid. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring sugar chain molecule found in all skin and soft tissues throughout the body. It attracts and binds water in the skin, providing volume and hydration, but also ‘cushioning’ and supporting collagen and elastin fibres and providing a medium, or carrier, for chemical messages between the cells.
